Abstract

A sheet feed apparatus utilizes a common drive roll/separator roll combination, to separate multiple sheets fed from one of a plurality of paper bins. Each paper bin has incorporated therein a set of picker wheels which are selectively actuable, to drive paper into and out of the paper bin.

Sheet Feed Apparatus

A sheet feed apparatus utilizes a common drive roll/separator roll combination, to separate multiple sheets fed from one of a plurality of paper bins. Each paper bin has incorporated therein a set of picker wheels which are selectively actuable, to drive paper into and out of the paper bin.

Sheet feed apparatus 11 includes a drive roll 13 and a separator or retard roll 15 combination for advancing single sheets, which have previously been fed from either sheet stack 17 or sheet stack 19. Retard roll 15 acts to prevent the feeding of two sheets, if such are fed to drive roll 13 by picker roll 21. The lowermost sheet of two sheets fed by picker roll 21 thus remains near the nip of the drive roll/retard roll combination, and is fed upon initiation of a subsequent feed cycle. If paper is to be fed from stack 19 on the subsequent initiation of a feed cycle, it is necessary to remove the sheet away from the nip of the retard roll/ drive roll combination. Switch 23 senses the presence of paper adjacent the nip of the drive roll/separator roll combination. Switch 23 energizes a solenoid pulling Bowden cable 25 upward, causing picker wheel 21 to pivot about shaft 27 and effecting engagement of gear 29 with gear 31. The paper feed mechanism is thereafter actuated causing gear 29 to transmit motion through gear 31 and belt 33 to reverse roll 35, which drives the sheet back into the sheet stack 17. After a predetermined time period, a further solenoid is...
