A nonmechanical means for simulating a scanning optical beam, is achieved through a programmed sequential scan of a ferroelectric ceramic material.

Energizing a crossed transparent electrode matrix on the surfaces of ferroelectric ceramic, causes a localized birefringence at the excited crossover. This will permit light transparency at that position and will act as a localized "mini- shutter".

By illuminating one side of the ferroelectric surface, a simulatad scanned optical beam will be emitted from the opposite ceramic surface.
