Abstract

Access to a disk pack on a disk drive by the associated electronics may be made by removing the disk pack cover when the pack is placed on the associated disk drive, as for example with the IBM 1316 disk pack; or, by providing a limited side access as exemplified by the IBM 5440 disk cartridge.

Side Disk Pack Access Device

Access to a disk pack on a disk drive by the associated electronics may be made by removing the disk pack cover when the pack is placed on the associated disk drive, as for example with the IBM 1316 disk pack; or, by providing a limited side access as exemplified by the IBM 5440 disk cartridge.

In the case of the side access method, the integral door assembly shown is useful in permitting easy access with an integral design structure. Pack 1 comprises carrying handle 2 attached to pack outer structure 3. Within the pack is disk 4 mounted on a spindle mount 5. The pack further has plastic door 6 having perforations or cutouts 7 allowing the plastic to bend, as shown. The pack has also a catch 8 and guide channel 9.

In operation, as the pack is inserted onto the drive table 10, catch 12 latches catch 8 on pack 1, driving door 6 along channel guide 9, allowing access to the interior of the pack for the drive associated electronics to interface with the internal pack.
