Abstract

There have been previously developed diesters having the structural formula (Image Omitted) wherein R is a radical selected from the group consisting of alkyl radicals containing from 1 to 12 carbon atoms, alkoxy radicals containing from 3 to 8 carbon atoms, alkanoyloxy radicals containing from 1 to 8 carbon atoms, and alkoxycarbonyloxy radicals containing from 1 to 6 carbon atoms, and S is a radical selected from the group consisting of alkyl radicals having 1 to 12 carbon atoms and alkoxy radicals having 3 to 8 carbon atoms. These esters are all nematic, with melting points as low as 43 degrees C and with broad nematic ranges (nematic clearing points greater than 100 degrees C). Some typical examples are shown in the following table.

These compounds are advantageously utilizable as liquid nematic materials, particularly in display panels containing a large number of characters that are matrix addressed.

There are described herein diesters, which are heterocyclic analogs of diesters represented by the above set forth general structural formula. These analogs also have wide nematic ranges. They are represented by the following general structural formula
