Steering Air Bearing With High Speed Air Switching

This device permits rapid change of the differential pressures (1-5 millisecond range) of two divided compartments of an air bearing, which is designed to laterally steer a flexible media, such as magnetic tape.

An air bearing 1 has two divided compartments 2 and 3 which are connected to the pressure supply source P(o), through an array of small diameter holes in chambers 4, 5. The pressure across the air holes 6 varies when the flow rates into chambers 2 and 3 change. The flow rate going into the chambers 2 and 3 are changed differentially by a circular low-inertia valve 7 at the middle, driven by a torque motor 8. Thus when the torque motor turns in a particular direction, air flow leaking from one chamber will increase while the other will decrease. This differential change of air flow in 2 and 3 results in a differential air pressure change in these two chambers. A flexible media such as magnetic tape supported by the air flow from compartments 2 and 3, is steered laterally when there is a differential pressure change between these two compartments.
