Abstract

By rotating the deflection plates about an axis perpendicular to the document to be printed, slanted characters (italics) are obtained from the standard font in an ink jet printer. An advantage over special italicized fonts is that "stairsteps" as in Fig. 2 are not generated on the slightly off-vertical lines.

Printing Italics Using a Standard Font

By rotating the deflection plates about an axis perpendicular to the document to be printed, slanted characters (italics) are obtained from the standard font in an ink jet printer. An advantage over special italicized fonts is that "stairsteps" as in Fig. 2 are not generated on the slightly off-vertical lines.

In Fig. 1, ink drops 1 are propelled from nozzle 2 toward document 3. The drops are variably charged by charge electrode 4 and deflected by a field established between deflection plates 5a and 5b. Drops not required for printing are directed to gutter 6. Line 7 represents the bottom of a character, as well as the axis of rotation of plates 5a and 5b.

A standard character box is represented by a, b, c, d in Fig. 3, and standard printing is shown in Fig. 4. An italics character box is represented by e, f, g, h in Fig. 3, and italics printing is shown in Fig. 5. Typically, the height of a standard character is reduced to h cos 15 degrees (which is 0.96593 h). The base line stays the same. Line 8a is the top of a standard character box and line 8b the top of an italics character box.
