Print Chain Brush Cleaner

The cleaner includes a cylindrical bristle brush 10 which is held in contact with an endless print chain 12, for cleaning the alphanumeric print characters on the exterior of the chain as the chain moves in its path.

Chain 12 is movably mounted on pulleys 14. Bristle brush 10 is rotatably mounted on arm 16 connected to the rotary output element of an electrically energized rotary solenoid 18. Solenoid 18 is mounted on flange 20 fixed to a stationary support 22. Solenoid 18 includes a helical return spring 24 for yieldably holding brush 10 out of engagement with chain 12, until solenoid 18 is energized to move brush 10 into engagement with chain 12 against the action of spring 24. When solenoid 18 is energized, brush 10 deflects chain 12 thereby providing compensation for brush wear, and the magnet in solenoid 18 seals to limit brush travel toward chain 12, so that as brush 10 wears, arm 16 cannot contact chain 12. Brush 10 is canted about 15 degrees with respect to chain 12 when in engagement therewith, for providing a scrubbing action on the chain. Brush 10 cleans itself by centrifugal force as brush 10 rotates due to its contact with moving chain 12.
