Abstract

The antibacklash gear 10 includes a pair of gear segments 12 and 14, at least one of which is formed of resilient material. and which have gear teeth 12a and 14a that are offset with respect to each other so that when gear 10 is in mesh with a mating spur gear 16, there is no backlash between the gears 10 and 16.

Antibacklash Gear

The antibacklash gear 10 includes a pair of gear segments 12 and 14, at least one of which is formed of resilient material. and which have gear teeth 12a and 14a that are offset with respect to each other so that when gear 10 is in mesh with a mating spur gear 16, there is no backlash between the gears 10 and
16.

Gear 10 comprises a steel hub 18 Integral with a central shaft 20. Gear sections 12 and 14 are connected by a connecting portion 22 having a smaller diameter than the gear sections 12 and 14, to provide a slot 24 between sections 12 and 14. Gear sections 12 and 14 and connecting portion 22 are preferably integral with each other and are formed of relatively resilient urethane. When gear 10 is in mesh with gear 16. which is an ordinary rigid spur gear, the offset teeth 12a and 14a fill up the gaps between the mating teeth of gears 10 and 16 so that there is no clearance. The offset of the teeth 12a and 14a is designed so that it is greater than the anticipated clearance or "wink", and the gear sections 12 and 14 deform slightly so that the teeth 12a and 14a fit between the rigid teeth of the gear 16. In lieu of forming both of the gear sections 12 and 14 and connecting portion 22 of resilient material, only one of the gear sections 12 and 14 may be of resilient material while the other gear section may be of rigid material.
