Automatic Loader for Tape Cartridge

This mechanism automatically loads and unloads a tape reel 10 from a cartridge 12, which consists of a plastic band surrounding the reel.

When a reel 10 with the cartridge 12 mounted on it is dropped into the autoloading chamber, the spindle 14 is moved forward by the motor 16 through the operation of the cam 18, the cam follower 20, and the spindle yolk 22. This causes the spindle 14 to enter the hole 15 and the spindle stop 24 to force the reel against the spring loaded presser plate 26, assuring proper seating of the reel 10 on the spindle 14.

The reel-lock actuator 28, driven by the cam 18 through the lock actuating arm 30 and the shaft 32, now moves relative to the spindle 14. In so moving, the reel-lock actuator 28 spreads the splines of the spindle 14 forcing them against the interior wall of the reel 10, so as to fix the reel 10 on the spindle. The spindle 14 then starts moving away from the plate 26 carrying the reel 10 and the cartridge 12 with it, until the cartridge 12 contacts the stop 34 popping it off the reel 10, and allowing the reel 10 to continue to move away from the plate 26 into the proximity of the capstan 40. Once in the proximity of the capstan, the spindle arm 46 pivots in the yolk 22 under force exerted on it by bar 38, so as to permit the reel 10 to move against the capstan 40 to allow removal of the tape from the reel.

After the tape has been used and rewound on the reel 10, the spindle is pivoted a...
