Abstract

When installing transducers in multitrack magnetic tape transports, it is very important that the physical mounting of the head have a predetermined relationship to the tape transport path. The relationship has been tested by observing the signals from the so-called outside transducers for precise alignment. The present description teaches a semiautomatic method of adjusting the heads. The computer measures skew as shown in the IBM Technical Disclosure Bulletin, "Skew Adjustment", by R. P. Dobransky et al, January, 1970, Volume 12, No. 8, pages 1299 and 1300.

Static Head Skew Adjustment

When installing transducers in multitrack magnetic tape transports, it is very important that the physical mounting of the head have a predetermined relationship to the tape transport path. The relationship has been tested by observing the signals from the so-called outside transducers for precise alignment. The present description teaches a semiautomatic method of adjusting the heads. The computer measures skew as shown in the IBM Technical Disclosure Bulletin, "Skew Adjustment", by R. P. Dobransky et al, January, 1970, Volume 12, No. 8, pages 1299 and 1300.

In accordance with the present procedure, at the start of the test, the range of maximum skew, i.e., mechanical and electrical, is first determined. A skew measurement is made in accordance with the referenced article. The computer program determines whether clockwise (CW) or counterclockwise (CCW) adjustment of the head is required, to compensate for the just-measured skew. For CW adjustment, the computer causes the tape to be quickly moved twice yielding two "beeps"; for CCW, three quick movements are used; and for skew being within the desired range, forward/backward motions are used. Then, after each adjustment, the skew is sampled several times and averaged for indicating the amount of skew adjustment. Optionally, the amount of adjustment can be indicated by the length of tape moved during the indication.
