Abstract

A magnetic head normally consists of a plurality of writing transducers and a plurality of reading transducers, separated by a shield. Where the write and read transducers are produced by deposition and lithographic techniques, a head need only consist of three monolithic parts, a read section and a write section, each carrying a plurality of transducers, and a center shield section. Where tolerances are small and parts are small, aligning the transducers in the read and write sections with respect to one another, and providing a contour to the head for desired interaction with media, presents problems.

A magnetic head normally consists of a plurality of writing transducers and a plurality of reading transducers, separated by a shield. Where tolerances are small and parts are small, aligning the transducers in the read and write sections with respect to one another, and providing a contour to the head for desired interaction with media, presents problems.

Accurate fabrication of a head with a minimum of machining is desirable. Little machining of head parts is required and high accuracy of construction is achieved as follows: before transducer fabrication, read, write and center sections are roughly machined to size, and then the mating faces of each section are imparted the required surface finish and flatness by grinding and lapping. The three sections are initially assembled by clamping them together, in an orientation similar to the orientation they will have in the final head. Then two precise locating notches are cut, for example, in opposite sides of the assembly. These notches provide each of the three sections with a common locating plane, which serves as datum for subsequent assembly operations.
