Adjustable Automatic Toner Feed Control System

A two-color reference wheel and a movable optic system are utilized to select a desired concentration of toner in a developer mixture, and thereafter maintain the selected toner concentration.

A portion of the developer mix within the developer unit of a copier machine is caused to flow past window 11. Light emanating from lamp 13 passes between teeth 14 and is reflected from the developer mixture and sensed by photosensor 15. Reference wheel 17 rotates causing the teeth 14 thereof to interrupt the light emanating from light 13, causing it to be reflected from the tooth 14 to the photosensor 15.

Each tooth 14 has two concentric color bands 23 and 24 located on the surface thereof. Lamp guide 25 is movable so that the light from lamp 13 strikes either band 23 or band 24 or a portion of both bands. Since the reflection characteristic of band 24 differs from that of band 23, the amount of light received at photosensor 15 from a tooth 14 is dependent upon the vertical position of the guide 25.

Once a desired reflectance is obtained from reference wheel 17, additional toner is automatically added to the developer material to replace that depleted by the copying process, whenever a difference in reflectivity is sensed between reflectance of the reference wheel 17 and that of the developer material flowing past window 11.
