Oscillating Mass Drive

The drive includes a weight or mass 10, which is oscillated due to the repeated actuations of an adjacent electromagnet 12.

Mass 10 is fixed on a torsion bar 14 which is anchored at one end 16 to a stationary frame 18. Mass 10 has a tooth 20 located adjacent to the core 22 of electromagnet 12. Electromagnet 12 is actuated or has a voltage applied to it at the natural frequency of the mass-torsional system (including mass 10 and torsion bar 14), causing the mass 10 to oscillate against the torsional force of bar
14.

The oscillating movement of mass 10 may be utilized for propelling document cards 24 one at a time off of a stack of such cards, located on a bed 26 supported by a spring 28. Bar 14 extends through frame 18 and is supported therefrom by a bearing 30. A roller 32 is carried by bar 14 and has friction contact with the uppermost card 24 of the stack of cards on bed 26. A one-way clutch 34 is disposed between roller 32 and the end of bar 14, and swinging latch elements 36 and 38 are effective for holding a card 24 against retrograde movement.

The end of bar 14 within roller 32 oscillates with mass 10, and the oscillating movements in one direction of bar 14 are transmitted through one-way clutch 34 to roller 32, causing a document card 24 on the top of the stack to be moved in the direction A.
