Prescan Station for Sort/Retrieval Coding

A prescan station which insures that the area on which sort/retrieval code is to be written, is free from any markings (smudges, type, document design, etc.) which may render the code unreadable.

The coding area is verified before the code is written, whereby any markings detected will bypass the coding area so as to decrease the reject rate at reading stations.

As the document, 4, moves into position for coding, edge sensor 1 triggers single-shot 2, which conditions AND gate 3. With the AND gate so conditioned, any markings on coding area 4 which are detected by photosensor 5 will activate the gate and set latch 6. The latch will pick relay 7 whose contacts may be used to lockup a keyboard, notifying an operator that the area is unfit for coding. Appropriate action/ routing may now take place, and the latch reset.

Severity of the reject level can be controlled by the threshold control of amplifier 8. The distance from edge sensor 1 to coding area 4 is equal to that of the coding station.
