Abstract

It is desired to make repeatable short interblock gaps (IBG's) with or without control indicia recorded therein. Each IBG is metered in accordance with the head intergap distance (i.e., the physical spacing between the read and write gaps in a magnetic transducer scanning magnetic media). U. S. Patent 3,444,541 teaches the use of head intergap distance to meter the start distance of an IBG. The entire IBG and sections thereof may be metered by the head intergap distance.

It is desired to make repeatable short interblock gaps (IBG's) with or without control indicia recorded therein. Each IBG is metered in accordance with the head intergap distance (i.e., the physical spacing between the read and write gaps in a magnetic transducer scanning magnetic media). U. S. Patent 3,444,541 teaches the use of head intergap distance to meter the start distance of an IBG. The entire IBG and sections thereof may be metered by the head intergap distance.

In Al, read/write transducer 10, having write gaps W and read gaps R, meters the distance from the end of data block 11 to marker signals 12. When electronic circuitry, not shown, detects the fall of the signal envelope sensed in gap R, write circuitry is actuated to record marker signals 12. In A2, the tape has come to rest under transducer 10 after recording marker signals 12. Gaps R are displaced from the end of data block 11. In A3, the metering of the start up distance is shown. Upon initiation of recording a subsequent data block 13, the tape is backhitched in accordance with Patent 3,274,574. This motion takes the tape to the right and returns it moving to the left, which is the normal write direction motion. As gaps R sense either the leading or trailing edge of marker signals 12, write circuitry is activated to record data in block 13. The IBG extends between data blocks 11 and 13.

A plurality of control indicia may be recorded in an IBG. In B1, data blocks 20 and 21 are separated by a short IBG. The space between the trailing edge of data block 20 and the leading edge of marker signals 22 is metered by the head intergap distance as in A1. A relatively long marker signal is recorded.
