Wear Compensating Roller Key

Automatic wear compensation is achieved by this spring biased tapered roller, which cooperates with a tapered keyway in a lead screw.

Gear 1 is provided with an extended portion 2 which is slotted as at 3. Shaft 4, positioned within openings 5 in the sides of the extended portion 2, supports tapered roller 6. The shaft 4 is biased toward the center of the gear by spring 7, which encircles the gear and is connected to each end of the shaft. The tapered roller 6 engages tapered slot 8 in lead screw 9. This permits the gear 1 to reciprocate on the lead screw 9 without the normal wear usually associated with the conventional key and keyway arrangement.
