The figures show a method and means for tracing microprogram and macroprogram addressing and execution functions in a data processor 1 (Fig. 1). A service processor (SVP), used in place of the standard console, allows the flexibility of controlling the simulation of manual console actions by use of microcode.

The micro/macro trace facility allows the programmers the capability to trace the addresses of the micro or macro instructions in programs for monitoring and debug.

Under control of the SVP microcode in magnetic disk unit 6, either the single cycle or instruction step switches 2 are activated.

The switch activated depends upon the type of address tracing. The SVP then simulates continuous depression of the start key, not shown.

This facility provides an effective means to trace either microprogram or macroprogram instruction streams by address. The trace facility can be initiated in either "free-run" mode or "compare" mode. Free-run mode simply tables the addresses of the instructions that are executed, while compare mode will also compare the address against a "predetermined path or stream" of instructions.

Initiation of tracing and mode select is done via the light pen 3 entry on the display device 4 of the service processor. The type of tracing selected and the mode of operation determines which hardware in the system is activated, to pass addresses to the service processor. Free-Run Mode.
