Pressure/Vacuum Pneumatic Actuator

This pneumatic actuator is used to move the cleaning ribbon of a magnetic tape unit, such as shown in U. S. Patent 3,731,289.

The tape unit-of Fig. 1 includes a read/write head 10. Cleaning ribbon 11 is shown positioned in inoperative position to the right of the head/magnetic tape interface. This position is also shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 3 shows the cleaning ribbon positioned at the interface. In Figs. 2 and 3, the magnetic recording tape, not shown, travels in groove 12, on the other side of the cleaning ribbon from the head.

The cleaning ribbon is moved between the Fig. 2 and 3 positions by movable slide 13. This slide is moved by a pneumatic piston carried within stationary housing 14.

Fig. 4 diagrammatically shows the pneumatic actuator system used to move slide 13, and thereby ribbon 11. Piston 15, enclosed in housing 14, is both spring and vacuum biased to the position shown, to thereby move slide 13 to the position shown in Fig. 2. Closed cavity 16 is connected to the tape unit's vacuum source 17 by way of pipe 18, valve assembly 19 and pipe 20.

In order to move the cleaning ribbon to the Fig. 3 position, valve 21 is opened. Positive pressure is now applied to piston 22 by way of pipe 23. Piston 22 now moves to the right, against the force of spring 24, and seats against seal
