Surface Polish for Bismuth Germanium Oxide

Bi(12)GeO(20) is an electrooptic conductor, which is useful because of its desirable properties that enable it to serve as a waveguide for ultrasonic waves.

Bi(12)GeO(20) improves its value as a waveguide if its guiding surface is highly polished. A polish that has been effective in removing surface irregularities from Bi(12)GeO(20) is a Pelon cloth saturated with solutions of HCl. A 50% solution of HCl in H(2)O gave excellent results within a minute of polishing on a sawed <110> surface of Bi(12)GeO(20). If more dilute solutions than a 50% solution of HCl and H(2)O were used, then the polishing times increased.

A suitable apparatus that could be employed for carrying out the polishing is shown and described in U. S. Patent 3,342,652.
