Present day optical scanners are prohibitively expensive for many small business applications. At the same time, existing magnetically readable printed characters do not give adequate quality for many general purpose hard copy applications.

To obviate these drawbacks, it is proposed that invisible magnetic code be produced distinctly and separately from the corresponding visual character therefore, but that the magnetic code and visual character be produced concurrently with simple apparatus, such as typewriter-like equipment. Several different approaches are described, using such equipment.

For example, conventional typewriter ribbon may be made to host magnetic ink. With such a ribbon arrangement, the character die, when actuated, would bite the ribbon transferring the magnetic ink to the paper to produce a high quality, visually readable character. At the same time, the imprinted characters are automatically made machine readable by any one of several techniques. For example, each character in the set may be magnetized according to a predetermined code. During transfer of the ink from the ribbon to the paper, the magnetic particles in the ink are aligned according to the code. If the character size is too small for adequate spacial magnetic encoding, as an alternative, the ribbon may comprise two strips, one of which contains visible magnetic ink while the other contains a colorless magnetic ink.
