Data Sharing System

A system is shown for sharing data between two CPU's in a multiprocessing /multiprogramming environment.

Specifically, the sharing of data is at the record level so that only individual records are reserved, rather than at the present dataset level requiring reservation of an entire volume for a CPU. This is accomplished by a data management subsystem (DMS) 11 and a channel-to-channel adapter 12, which allows each CPU to treat the other as a ] data-storage device. Thus, the DMS of a first CPU is notified of the desired data at OPEN time from a user program 13. Later, at GET time, the access method compatibility interface routine 14 intercepts the user's request, and the request for the desired data is forwarded to the other CPU. The other DMS acts as the control agent for sharing and initiates the accessing of the desired record, so long as the record is not reserved. The user program thus requires no change to operate in the shared environment.
