A machine is described that is capable of making copies of original documents by ink jet technology. The machine has functional properties such as stationary document glass and fast operating speeds.

Figs. 1 and 2 show a configuration in which a scanner and ink jet nozzles are rigidly combined into one assembly. This assembly translates and reciprocates along a splined shaft. The reciprocation is accomplished by a mechanism such as a cam follower and cam. The translation is accomplished by a mechanism such as a leadscrew. The scanner and nozzles are always mechanically synchronized. Therefore, precise velocity control is not required, and a minimal amount of buffering would be required between the scanner and the nozzles. Because the nozzles reciprocate, it is necessary that their tangential velocity be low enough to make acceleration and deceleration of the assemblage practical. This implies that the nozzles operate in other than the binary mode. Some range of a microraster mode of operation will provide accurate enough placement of drops, so that gaps or streaks will not occur between adjacent nozzles. The number of diodes in the scanner array would be the number of nozzles, times the number of positions in the microraster for each nozzle. This machine has a stationary curved document glass and a curved stationary vacuum paper hold- down plenum.
