Toner Level Sensor Apparatus

A toner level sensor apparatus is employed to provide an output warning signal, whenever the toner supply in a copy machine falls below a predetermined level.

The level sensor apparatus includes a paddle 11 having a thin flat portion which tapers into a round section 13. The size and weight of the paddle are controlled, so that the flat portion of the paddle remains stationary relative to the toner particles 15 when the reservoir 17 is full. Rotating reset arm 19 compensates for the bulk flow of toner through the reservoir, and insures that the paddle 11 remains in a fixed position as long as toner 15 is in the reservoir 17. As the toner level falls below this reset position, paddle 11 pivots after rotating reset arm 19 passes thereby coming to rest on top of the toner.

Once the level of toner in the reservoir has reached a level such that the paddle has pivoted through a fixed angle, round section 13 thereof acts on lever 21 to close switch 23. Magnetic latch assembly 25 retains lever 21 in its actuated position, until a new cartridge 27 containing a fresh supply of toner is inserted above reservoir 17. Insertion of a cartridge 27 momentarily pivots arm 29 to its dotted line position, causing magnet assembly 25 to pivot to its dotted line position thereby releasing lever 21.

Round section 13 of paddle 11 extends through an extensible diaphram, thereby providing a leakproof toner seal and an unincumbered pivot joint for paddle 11. The...
