Abstract

The figures illustrate a low-inertia type disk or print wheel 1, which is also the rotor of an induction motor and the coded character locating means. Wheel 1 is intended for use with a hammer mechanism which would impact an individual character 2 against the medium to be marked when a hammer, not shown, strikes the anvil portion 3 formed by folding back a portion of an embossed character tab 4. Disk 1 is provided with punched locating holes 5 for accurate alignment, using optical sensors, of an embossed character tab 4 in front of a hammer. Slots 6 carrying a gray code, or similar type of binary code, would be punched in the inner annular area of disk 1 for use with optical positioning systems, to identify which character would be in front of the hammer at any time.

A serated hole 7 is formed in the center of disk 1, to facilitate attachment on the bearing or central shaft of a motor of the induction type. Embossed poles 8 for a linear induction motor or, alternatively a series of punched out slots 9, leaving bars 10 intermediate the slots 9, could be formed in another area of the disk 1 as induction motor bars. Two blank areas 11 are left at opposite extremes along the periphery of disk 1, to provide an area for the attaching or omission of balance plates.
