Lead Straightening Device

The drawings show a lead straightening device for straightening the leads of a multipin module. Fig. 1 shows the open or unactivated position and Fig. 2 shows the closed or activated position.

Module 10 is positioned below lead straightening device 12 with the leads extending toward the lead straightening device.

Lead straightening device 12 includes a housing 14 and a movable clevis 16, on which are mounted inside link 18 which carries the upper blade 19 and outside link 20 which carries lower blade 21. The inside and outside links 18 and 20 are pivotally mounted on pin 22 and activated by the motion of pivoting pins 24 which are attached to the clevis 16.

In operation, a force is applied to the top of clevis 16 by either pneumatic pressure or a solenoid to move clevis 16 toward module 10. The motion of clevis 16 causes pivoting pins 24 to move along slots in the inside and outside links 18 and 20, causing the links and thus blades 19 and 21 to pivot about pin 22 to engage the leads of module 10.

Fig. 2 shows the lead straightener in the closed position, with blades 19 and 21 acting on the leads of module 10.

In an alternate embodiment, the device 12 can be used to offset leads to change spacing. For example, if the leads are 0.125 inch apart as they exit the module, and the holes into which leads must be placed are 0.100 inch apart, the lead straightening device 12 may be constructed to offset the leads to provide the necessary 0.100 i...
