Target Structure for Deformable Display

The drawing shows a section of a target of a display of the type in which a reflecting metal film is supported on an elastomer layer that is deformable, by electrostatic forces produced by a pattern of charge from an electron beam. Light is reflected from the metal film to form a viewable image.

In the apparatus of the drawing, the electron beam excites phosphors that are supported by a layer of mica. A voltage is maintained between the metal film and a transparent conductor. A photoconductive layer between the elastomer and the transparent conductor is made conductive in small regions, by the light that is emitted by the phosphor. In these conductive regions, the potential of the transparent conductor is applied to deform the elastomer.

Thus, in this target structure, the elastomer is located directly between the layers that establish the electric field and the resolution of the device is improved. This target structure also has an improved flexibility in the choice of operating voltages, and it permits a choice of various phosphors and photoconductors.
