A device is provided to generate a stream of droplets of ferromagnetic fluids having uniform spacing.

A stream of ferromagnetic fluid 10 from the nozzle 12 is caused to break up into droplets 14 by introducing a perturbation in the stream. The drop spacing fluctuates at a rapid rate after a short distance from the nozzle, making precise drop selection difficult and causing groups of adjacent drops to merge.

The velocity fluctuation is attributed to the magnetic interaction between droplets with random-magnetic moment.

A weak magnetic field 16 introduced near the break-off point of the droplets stabilizes the stream to uniform spacing and prevents the merging of the drops. This field may be introduced by a permanent magnet 18 or a Helmholtz coil, and should be weak relative to the deflection voltages.
