Fluid Volume Measuring System

A fluid volume measuring system is provided for measuring fluids such as body fluids with a high degree of accuracy.

The fluid volume measuring system includes fluid holder 10 which is filled, for example, with urine draining from a patient, not shown. While the fluid is draining into holder 10, solenoid 11 is de-energized to permit movable bar 12 to clamp drain tube 13 against fixed bar 14 under action of spring 15 and thereby occlude tube 13. Then at a predetermined time, i.e., at one hour intervals, computer 20 samples the voltage generated by load cell 17 which is proportional to the sum of the weight of the fluid in holder 10, holder 10, solenoid 11, tube 13, bars 12 and 14, spring 15 and the associated supporting members. Computer 20 then provides a signal for energizing solenoid 11 which, in turn, moves bar 12 away from bar 14 to permit fluid to drain from holder 10 via tube 13.

After all of the fluid has drained from holder 10, this may be determined by allowing a predetermined amount of time to elapse or by computer 20 sensing the output of load cell 17, computer 20 provides a signal for de-energizing solenoid 10 to permit spring 15 to move bar 12 so as to occlude tube 13. Computer 20 also reads the output of load cell 17 and subtracts this reading from the first load cell reading, to provide a value that is proportional to the weight of the fluid drained from holder 10.
