Automatic Cutoff Lamination Fixture

This fixture is usable in practicing the method of lamination described in U.
S. Patent 3,650,021.

This fixture laminates two printed-circuit cards into an integral tube by differential expansion which occurs during an elevated heat cycle. The resulting tube consists of a number of individual printed-circuit motor armatures which are axially connected end-to-end by metal selvage. This fixture automatically cuts the tube's selvage to separate the individual armatures, one from the other.

The central mandrel, about which the cards (not shown) are wrapped, includes a number of solid mandrels 10, one mandrel for each of the individual armatures. The outer diameter of these expansion mandrels is slightly smaller than the desired inner diameter of the tubular armatures. Due to the accurately predictable expansion characteristics of these mandrels, the temperature of the heat cycle can be selected to insure that the mandrels will expand to establish the armature's inner diameter to a close tolerance.

The surrounding outer two-piece shell 11 of the fixture is formed of invar steel. Intermediate each of the tubes 10, in the cutoff area between two axially adjacent armatures, is an automatic cutoff assembly 12.
