Abstract

In fabricating a gas panel, one of the critical steps is to edge seal the two plates with dielectric coated conductors, while maintaining a uniform distance between the plate surfaces. A soft glass rod sealant or glass frit is positioned in the areas to be sealed and the assembly placed in an oven. During the sealing cycle, the sealing material reflows and the plates settle with the hard glass spacer rods controlling the dimension between the plates. This has been accomplished using cylindrical or round spacer rods, but such rods tend to roll during assembly, providing only a point contact between the plates.

During the sealing cycle, the sealing material reflows and the plates settle with the hard glass spacer rods controlling the dimension between the plates. This has been accomplished using cylindrical or round spacer rods, but such rods tend to roll during assembly, providing only a point contact between the plates.

Referring to the drawing, one end of a gas panel assembly after sealing is illustrated with the panel broken away. The panel assembly comprises glass substrates 3, 5 with associated orthogonal conductor arrays 7, 9 having dielectric coatings 11, 13, respectively. The seal material 15 has been reflowed, and the rectangular spacer 17 controls the distance between plates. Dimensions for a typical spacer rod used is 4 mils by 12 mils.

By using a rectangular spacing rod, a surface contact rather than point contact is established, providing a stronger assembly and facilitating assembly. With a rectangular spacer rod, the light travels directly through the spacer rendering it invisible. Cylindrical rods tend to diffuse the light and are readily visible.
