Modular Construction System

The system illustrated can provide structures of various sizes and shapes, which can be assembled and disassembled quickly without special tools. It is particularly suitable for modules in a data processing system.

Four corner sections 1 of extruded or moulded plastic or metal are joined together loosely by X frames 2, similarly of moulded metal or plastic. The corner sections 1 are shaped to permit the X frames 2 to slide within them, and can be cut to any length and size to correspond to stock X frame sizes. Suitable size end plates 3, each with four corner posts 4, lock the corner sections 1 together when the corner posts are fitted into the ends of the corner sections and expanded by screws fitting into tapering split holes 5.

A die cast mounting plate 6 for any load to be supported is held between two corner sections 1 by two X frames 4, and fixed in place by steel-lock wedges 7 which pivot on the X frames. While two X frames are needed for each mounting plate 6, a total of four mounting plates, one on each surface of the four-sided structure, can be provided by two X frames.

Clip in cover strips 8 cut to length, as required, fill in the gaps between the corner sections 3 where there are no mounting plates 6, leaving a smooth unbroken surface. The same size corner posts 3 can be used for a modular range of structure sizes, by using different width cover strips 8 and bigger or smaller X frames as required. Increased strength may be...
