Sheet Feed Mechanism

Sheets are selectively fed from one of two sheet feed mechanisms upon actuation of a drive system, which is common to both sheet feed mechanisms.

Sheets are selectively fed from the top of either stack 11 or stack 13 upon actuation of the drive system. When sheets are to be fed from stack 11, picker wheel 15, separator wheel 17, and feed roll couple 19 rotate in the direction of the arrows associated therewith. Simultaneously, separator roll 21, restraint roll 23, and feed roll couple 25 rotate in the direction of the arrows shown, thereby preventing sheets from advancing from stack 13.

23. Picker rolls 15 and 29 have overrunning clutches allowing rotation in the direction of the arrow associated with picker roll 15. The separator rolls 17 and 21 are interconnected by gearing and chains to picker rolls and feed rolls 15, 19 and 29, 25 respectively.

With reference to Fig. 2, the bidirectional drive for separator roll 17 of Fig. 1 is depicted. When paper stack 11 is selected, solenoid 31 is actuated by the mode logic 33 causing pulley 35 to assume its solid line position, thereby causing chain 37 to move in the direction of arrow 39 effecting counterclockwise rotation of separator roll 17.
