Abstract

The envelope flaps in a large stack of envelopes cause the stack to tilt. This is due to the fact that the flaps of the envelopes overlap, thus presenting more thicknesses of paper on one side of the stack than on the other. As the envelopes are raised in the hopper to provide successive envelopes to a feed mechanism which are fed from the top of the stack, the tilting angle decreases as the stack size decreases. The illustrated mechanism keeps the top envelopes lying at right angles to the feed mechanism, not shown, as the hopper bed moves up from its lower-most extremity to its uppermost extremity.

As shown, there is a hinged hopper bed with a cam surface opposite to the hinged side, which allows the hopper bed to be at a maximum tilt angle when at its lowermost extremity, such that the envelope on the top of the stack lies in a horizontal plane. This tilt angle gradually decreases as the bed is raised, keeping the top envelope in a horizontal position as the envelopes are removed from the stack as the bed progresses upward.
