Abstract

Pin Inserter

This mechanism is utilized to insert flattened electrical connector pins into printed-circuit boards. The pin inserter mechanism comprises an orientation station 9 including a supply hopper 10, a shuttle 11, a drive wheel 12, an improper pin exit 13, a pin storage area 14, and a cavity 15. The pin insert gun 17 includes an air cylinder and ram 18 and a pin locating and receiving area 19.

The electrical connector pins 23 are loaded into the hopper 10 and forced to fall against the shuttle 11, which is in a continually shuttling operation. The shuttling motion will encourage the pins to lay down on drive wheel 12. Drive wheel 12 will force the pins outward into the cavity 15. As the drive wheel 12 turns, it will force the pins through the cavity 15. If the pin orientation is improper, the pin will be exited at 13.

A correctly oriented pin will exit the storage area 14 and continue into the insert gun 17, at the locating and receiving area 19. The pin 23 will be positioned at point 20, whereupon the trigger 21 on the insert gun is depressed energizing the air cylinder and ram 18, which forces the pin 23 into the printed-circuit board
22. When the trigger 21 is released, the next pin 23 enters the insert gun at 18 and is positioned at 20. Consequently, the machine is ready for the next pin insert cycle.
