Abstract

The day of the week is an important element in postal data reporting. This algorithm saves the entry and storage of a day of the week field or element for each record in an active data base. (Image Omitted) The algorithm supplies the day of the week for a single date or vector of dates each from the 20th century, and each a six digit number of the form: MMDDYY. Example: DAYWK 100273 032843 122573 MO SU TU NOTE: The algorithm will not work for the year 2000.

Day of the Week APL Algorithm

The day of the week is an important element in postal data reporting. This algorithm saves the entry and storage of a day of the week field or element for each record in an active data base.

(Image Omitted)

The algorithm supplies the day of the week for a single date or vector of dates each from the 20th century, and each a six digit number of the form: MMDDYY. Example: DAYWK 100273 032843 122573 MO SU TU NOTE: The algorithm will not work for the year 2000.

The algorithm may take alternate forms. For example, the characters portraying the day of the week can be changed to some other set, by simply modifying the first expression in parentheses. Example: Three character day abbreviations can be coded 7 3(rho) 'TUEWEDTHURFRI-SUNMON'. In addition, the function can be changed to give a numeric result instead of a character result. Example: Modify the first expression in parentheses to 7 1(rho) 3 4 5 6 7 1 2 to make SUNDAY = 1, MONDAY = 2, etc.
