AC Space Transformer for Multipin Systems

The structure described is used to provide electrical continuity under AC environment between contact points that are positioned on close center-line spaces to a larger array, which enables conventional contact mechanisms to be used.

As shown in Fig. 1, the structure consists of top and bottom plates 2 and 3. Each plate contains the proper hole arrays. The coax cables are fabricated as shown in Fig. 2, where their outside diameter gradually decreases toward the bottom edge. This structure allows the required close spacing. Fig. 3 shows one possible structure which provides a quick disconnect contact using buckling beams. These beams could also be AC coax lines with the proper spring properties (Fig. 4). The structure could also include decoupling capacitors which are mounted, as shown in Fig. 5.

Fig. 6 illustrates a system which utilizes the space transformer. The probe assembly is used to test semiconductor devices. The space transformer provides the continuity between this assembly and the pin electronic box, which is part of an overall test system.
