Abstract

A high-performance, orthogonal actuator carries only voice coils on transversely movable carriages, actuated by a pair of orthogonal acting magnets 11 and 12 stationarily mounted on base plate 10. By stationarily mounting the magnets, inertia of X carriage 13 and Y carriage 14 for carrying work member 35 is reduced.

A high-performance, orthogonal actuator carries only voice coils on transversely movable carriages, actuated by a pair of orthogonal acting magnets 11 and 12 stationarily mounted on base plate 10. By stationarily mounting the magnets, inertia of X carriage 13 and Y carriage 14 for carrying work member 35 is reduced.

X carriage 13 rides on a pair of parallel guide rods 15, while Y carriage 14 rides on a similar pair of guide rods 16 and 17 orthogonally disposed with respect to rods 15. X acting magnet 12 on base 10 coacts with voice coil 20 to move X carriage 13. To position carriage 13, known voice coil actuator control circuits (not shown) supply electrical currents to coil 20. U-shaped pole piece 21 conducts magnetic flux from magnet 12 to the outer periphery of voice coil 20. Internal flux return path 22 completes the magnetic circuit.

Y carriage 14 moves under urging of voice coil 25. Coil 25 continuously resides within the magnetic flux field of magnet 11 and is controlled in the same manner as voice coil 20. Flux return path 28 has an X extent 26 less than the coil 25 axial length, to accommodate the X motions of voice coil 25 on carriage
13. In this arrangement, coil 25 always is within the field of magnet 11. That is, voice coil 25 has an X length 26; then X length of magnet 11 and flux path 28 is equal to the coil 26 X length minus the stroke 27 of voice coil 20.
