Fiber Optic Converter Illumination Apparatus

This apparatus provides for intense illumination of a small area with selected wavelength light, while eliminating or substantially reducing wear of fiber optics in contact with moving objects.

A ribbon of fiber optics 1 is laminated with glass, quartz or other transparent plates 2. A light source 3 is provided at the edges of the plates 2 so that light is conducted internally through the plates to the other edge 4, thereby focusing light upon an objective 5. Light is refracted through the fiber optics 6 from a linear or other special form at 7, to a matrix or other convenient form at 8 for sensing.

The laminated glass and adjacent fiber optic linear ends at 4 are polished to a radius at 9, leaving flat laminate material 10 outside the fibers thereby enhancing focusing.

Mechanical contact of fibers 6 and objective 5 is eliminated by micro- polishing the fiber and glass ends 11 to a radius of r = 2000t/2/ where t = plate thickness plus 1/2 fiber thickness

Matrix 8 may be associated with eletronic or optical sensing to permit document or other object readout.
