Abstract

In conventional gas discharge display devices, one of the critical parameters of the display is the distance between the inner surfaces of the dielectric coated conductor arrays. A monolithic structure which eliminates this parameter and, in addition, uses conventional printed-circuit techniques in gas panel fabrication, is constructed as follows.

In conventional gas discharge display devices, one of the critical parameters of the display is the distance between the inner surfaces of the dielectric coated conductor arrays. A monolithic structure which eliminates this parameter and, in addition, uses conventional printed-circuit techniques in gas panel fabrication, is constructed as follows.

Referring to Fig. 1, a plurality of vertical conductors 3A - 3N are disposed on the front or viewing surface of the display, while a plurality of substantially orthogonal conductors 5A - 5N are disposed on the opposite side of the display. The horizontal conductors 5A - 5N are arranged in pairs, each pair having associated vertical tabs 7A - 7N which are connected to their associated horizontal conductor pairs via plated through holes 9; one hole being associated with each strip but adjacent tabs being connected to alternate conductors in the conductor pairs. These tabs are on the same horizontal plane as the vertical conductors, and the discharge occurs between selected tabs and adjacent vertical conductors.

Referring to Fig. 2, an end view of the monolithic structure shows a conventional multilayer printed-circuit structure 11, in which the horizontal conductors are brought to the surface via plated through holes.
