Abstract

In a gaseous discharge display panel, dielectric coated conductor arrays are formed on substrate glass plates, the arrays positioned substantially orthogonal to each other, and the plates sealed about their edges and filled with an ionizable gas under appropriate pressure. The intersections of the individual conductors in the arrays defines individual gas cells, firing of which is accomplished by relatively high-drive signals applied to selected orthogonal conductors, while lower amplitude sustain signals are applied continuously to all conductors to maintain the display. Rectangular alternating signals are used for the sustain, write and erase signals, and individual switching devices are generally required to isolate the high-voltage driving signals from the low-level logic control and selection signals.

In view of the multiplicity of drivers required for a rectangular array of panel lines, it is desirable to utilize a relatively inexpensive device which can be fabricated in integrated circuit form. In view of the alternating nature of the gas discharge panel drive, sustain and erase requirements, one suitable isolation device for this purpose is a bidirectional triode thyristor (triac). In addition to the isolation provided by the triac, it also functions as a matching circuit which provides a low impedance to current, and can be latched up in a low-impedance state to eliminate the additional requirement of a control element per line.

Referring to the drawing, the sustain drive is provided by sustain drive transistors 3 and 5 which are applied to a section of the primary winding 7 of transformer 9.
