Feed Roll Opening Mechanism

A feed roll opening mechanism is employed to separate the driving feed rolls in a sheet feed mechanism, thereby facilitating the removal of sheets trapped between the feed rolls.

The topmost sheet of a stack of sheets, not shown, is picked by picker roll 11 and passes between separator roll 12 and restraint roll 13, and thence between feed roll 14 and feed roll 15 to a utilization device. When sheets are not being fed, roll 11 is moved above the sheet stack and rolls 13 and 15 are moved away from the stationarily positioned rolls 12 and 14, as depicted. When it is desirous to feed sheets, the actuator coil 17 is energized to thereby effect rotation of eccentrics 19 and 21 through 180 degrees of motion, thereby rotating rolls 13 and 15 into contact with corresponding rolls 12 and 14.

The rotary motion is imparted to the eccentrics 19 and 21 from the constantly rotating shaft 23. Energization of the coil 17 releases the armature 25 thereby releasing the clutch sleeve 27, which drops spring 29 (an overrunning spring clutch) onto the rotating arbor 30. The detented arbor 31 is driven 180 degrees before clutch sleeve 27 contacts the upper lug of actuator 25 to unwrap spring
29. Detented arbor 31 is held in location by detent arm 32. The detented arbor 31 is fixedly connected to gear 33 which is fixedly connected to eccentric 21. Rotation of detented arbor 31 effects corresponding rotation of gear 33 and eccentric 21, and further effects rotation of eccentric 19 through gears 34 and 35.

The same energization cycle is utilized to effect separation of the feeds rolls when it is no longer desirous to feed sheets. Rotation of gear 33 during the roll opening cycle also provides motion to lift picker roll 11 from the sheet stack....
