Abstract

Combination tape reels and containers have been described, for example, in the IBM Technical Disclosure Bulletin, Vol. 6, No. 2, July 1963, pages 20-21. This type of container is economical and practical as it minimizes material and storage space requirements. Further material economy can be realized by eliminating the top flange of the reel.

Combination Tape Reel and Cartridge

Combination tape reels and containers have been described, for example, in the IBM Technical Disclosure Bulletin, Vol. 6, No. 2, July 1963, pages 20-21. This type of container is economical and practical as it minimizes material and storage space requirements. Further material economy can be realized by eliminating the top flange of the reel.

This combination reel 12 and cartridge 14 provides both winding and storage requirements for a web 22, for example, of magnetic media. Reel 12 includes flange 16 and concentric hollow winding hub 18. The circumference 20 of flange 16 is tapered. Web material 22 is wound around hub 18 and supported by flange
16. The end of hub 18 opposed to flange 16 carries a portion of a locking mechanism. As shown, the locking mechanism is in the form of radially extending lugs 24. There is no flange carried by the reel 12 on the end of the hub 18 opposed to flange 16. Wound web 22 is thus directly supported by a flange on only one side.

Removable cartridge cover 14 is made of a rigid material. It is designed to fit over the web 22 and includes edge portions 26 tapered at an angle, complementary to the angle of the tapered circumference of flange 16. Cover 14 also includes a portion of a locking mechanism. This cover locking mechanism is also in the form of radially extending lugs 28 complementary to lugs 24 carried by the reel. When the cover 14 and reel 12 are brought together, lugs 24 and 28 can be ro...
