Orthogonal Scanning Feature

This is a circuit for efficiently rotating data fields stored in a standard memory unit, in either the normal or orthogonal directions. The circuit can be applied to any system in which high-speed access is required for normal and orthogonal data, whether it be from index or control tables or graphic or character fields.

For implementing the orthogonal access feature, a standard control circuit is modified, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, through the addition of exclusive OR circuits 1-8 and associated input and output lines. The circuit shown in Fig. 1 results in a different data organization in memory than the standard organization, as shown in Figs. 3A and 3B. With the new organization, the data can be extracted in either the normal or orthogonal directions under control of the rotate control line shown in Fig. 2. The time and number of accesses to memory is the same for each case with the serialized extracted data field shown in Fig. 3C for the normal and orthogonal cases.
