Abstract

Flexible disks 10 are in a stack 12, and each has a notch 10a on one-half o~ its periphery and a corresponding boss 10b on the other half of its periphery, defined by radially extending edges 10c and 10d. The disks are stacked in staggered order so that the edges 10c present a spiral thread 14 on the outside of the stack 12. Access arms 16 are moveable vertically and horizontally so that each may contact the thread 14, raise one disk away from the disk below it, and then move into the resulting space between the disks for a reading or writing action.

The stack 12 may, for example, be made up of 1024 disks 10; and these may be arranged in sixteen groups of sixty-four disks each. Each disk is rotated 360/64 degrees with respect to the adjacent disk 10, so that each group of 64 disks has one complete spiral thread 14.

The disks 10 are supported on a bottom plate 26; and plate 26 and disks 10 are driven by a motor 28, such as at 30 rpm. Each arm 16 has rack teeth 30, and a pinion gear 32 driven by a DC motor 34 is in mesh with the teeth 30, horizontally moving the associated arm 16.
