Edge Detection Technique for Reading Bar Codes

The system as depicted in block diagram form operates on the slope of a signal waveform, indicative of a bar code, to determine the leading and trailing edges of the bar code. The system operates as follows:

A signal waveform, indicate of a bar code, is generated by scanner 8 and fed to automatic gain control 10 which normalizes the signal to keep it within operating range. The signal from automatic gain control 10 is differentiated by differentiator 12, whose output is coupled to peak detector 14. Peak detector 14 detects points on the signal slope where the rate of change is greatest, and outputs signals defining the leading and trailing edges of the bar code.
