Abstract

A type wheel comprises, as shown in Fig. 1, a molded plastic disc 10 having radial fingers 12 with type characters 14 on one face and locking tabs 16 on the other face, which engage and interlock with spring fingers 18 of a metal spring disc 20, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The spring fingers 18 are locked between the tabs 16 and the plastic fingers 12 by placing the plastic and metal discs 10 and 20 together and rotating them slightly relative to one another.

Low Cost Type Wheel

A type wheel comprises, as shown in Fig. 1, a molded plastic disc 10 having radial fingers 12 with type characters 14 on one face and locking tabs 16 on the other face, which engage and interlock with spring fingers 18 of a metal spring disc 20, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The spring fingers 18 are locked between the tabs 16 and the plastic fingers 12 by placing the plastic and metal discs 10 and 20 together and rotating them slightly relative to one another.

The combination is positioned as shown in Fig. 4, on one side of a slug carrier disc 22 having a plurality of slideable slugs 24 positioned in alignment with the type fingers 12. An interposer disc 26 is positioned on the side of the carrier disc 22 away from the type disc 10 with relatively stiff spring fingers 28 corresponding to the type fingers 12. The interposer fingers 28 are impacted by a print hammer, not shown, and transfer the hammer energy to the slugs 24 and thence to the metal disc and plastic type disc fingers 12 and 18 for printing.

By using a keyhole type slot and stud arrangement the plastic type disc 10 can be readily detached from the metal spring disc 20, and changes of type font may be easily made or a worn type disc replaced.
