Abstract

An aqueous solution of water soluble diazotype components and binders is coated on transparent glass by spinning or the like and air dried to form a photographic mask. The coated glass is selectively exposed through an original using a collimated ultraviolet light source with emulsion-to-emulsion contact; then the coating is developed in a gaseous ammonia atmosphere, to provide a high-resolution image pattern especially suitable for making printed-circuit boards or the like. After use, the glass may be conditioned for reuse by washing off the mask pattern merely with water, without requiring toxic or ecologically undesirable solvents. A formulation exemplifying the use of such a system is: Sulfosalicylic acid 1.2 gm Thiourea 1.

Sulfosalicylic acid 1.2 gm

Thiourea 1.2 gm

Zinc chloride 1.8 gm

m-Hydroxyphenylurea 2.5 gm

p-Morpholinobenzene diazonium zinc chloride 2.5 gm

Polyvinyl acetate emulsion(preferably GELVA* 2.0-7.0 gm

emulsion 55R)

Water 95 ml

It will be understood, of course, that the quantities of coupler and diazo may be varied, as desired, to tailor exposure speed or opacity to the final use. Furthermore, other water soluble components or couplers may be used in lieu of the above. * Trademark of Monsanto Company.
