Programmable Cluster Punching System

There is shown a via hole punching tool which punches holes of very small dimensions in green ceramic sheets. The system consists of a Z axis punching head and an X-Y numerically controlled table. All axes are driven and controlled by stepping motors under punched tape control or computer control.

The punching head shown consists of a number of spring preloaded punches 1, which are programmed to punch a variety of hole patterns and grids by an interposer plate 2. The interposer plate is fastened to the workpiece 3 and is transported with it relative to the punching head, thus permitting the interposer 2 to determine the actual hole pattern perforated. Where there is an opening in the interposer 2, the punch will make a hole in the green sheet 3. If there is no opening in the interposer 2, the punch 1 will be stopped thereby from punching a hole in the green sheet 3. Each punch 1 is guided on its shank at 4 and at its tip at 5 to insure maximum strength and accurate alignment with die 6.
