This information storage recording and reproducing arrangement lowers storage cost and decreases access time.

Information is recorded on a magnetic buffer medium 10 at a high-linear density with a conventional electromagnetic transducer 12 providing a readily realizable dimension of track width.

A narrow portion of the recorded track is transferred thermomagnetically onto another magnetic record medium 14 for storage. The heating required is provided by a focused laser beam 16.

Reproduction of the stored information is effected by thermomagnetically retransferring the narrow track on the medium 14 to the medium 10 using another laser beam 18, or the same beam optically directed to the retransfer station. The transferred narrow track is then reproduced by another conventional electromagnetic transducer 20 which may, and usually does, have a tracking width substantially wider than the transformed narrow track.

Data has been stored at densities projecting more than 20,000 flux changes per inch and 2,000 tracks per inch, using chromium dioxide coated tape for the buffer and mass storage media 10 and 14.

A single laser and a single-laser beam have been described. It is contemplated that arrays of laser beams, from either a multiple of lasers or multiplexed from a single laser, will be used in many situations where large quantities of data are stored and transferred.
