This is a method and apparatus for directly measuring the operation or a spray unit by using a pressure transducer located within the spray path, relocating the transducer at different locations, and mapping the spray force.

In prior measuring apparatus, parameters such as flow rate, pressure, spray pattern, orifice size, and temperature are arrived at empirically, and the spray patterns are judged entirely by visual inspection of their results. Any departure from desired results is difficult to correlate to the parameter or parameters causing the problem.

This apparatus is comprised of a force sensor 10 having a flat surface area and connected to a moveable shaft 12. The shaft is placed through a bushing 14 and a force transducer 16 which includes a coil connected to an output circuit 18. Movement of the shaft 12 within the coil induces an output signal at the output circuit 18. The force sensor 10 is returned to a neutral position by a spring 20.

In operation, measurements are taken with the force sensor 10 located in the workpiece plane in the path of the spray pattern from the nozzle 22. The sprayed fluid striking the force sensor 10 causes the transducer 16 to react to the force with which the fluid strikes the sensor. The output of the transducer 16 is a measure of this force.
